Securing Lawful Citizens during Gangland Hits

Just last week, the media has reported extensively about yet another criminal assassination attempt, during which a lawful citizen had been severely injured. Unfortunately, this is not the first time such an incident occurs and there is no doubt that Israeli security authorities must do everything in their power in order to prevent the recurrence of similar scenarios. The cooperation between the three branches of government is of utmost importance

Obviously, the bystander that was at the wrong place at the wrong time cannot be faulted for just wanting to cross the street. We ought not to reach a situation in which Israeli citizens will be afraid to move around for fear of being targeted by criminals. This is exactly when the police force has to use all the resources at their disposal in order to prevent any civilian casualties.

Nevertheless, the abovementioned duty does not rest solely on the police. This has to be a combined and integrative effort carried out by all three branches of government: The Knesset, Israel's legislative branch, has to make sure that the Israeli law includes a specific reference to such cases. The executive branch, in this case the police has to its job, and finally the judicial branch, represented by the judges, must make sure that those offenders appearing before them should face the most severe consequences out there.

There is no room for mercy

Today, the Israeli public feels that the Knesset, the police and the Israeli courts, simply do not do enough to ensure the absolute obedience to a very simple rule: Harming innocent civilians is a red line unacceptable under any circumstances.

For example, the Members of Knesset must determine unambiguously and unequivocally that every criminal charged with attempted assassination during which an innocent citizen is injured or killed – will face a doubled, or even a tripled sentence that will keep them locked away for many years ahead. This is obviously true for both mercenaries and perpetrators alike. Such a message will force them to think twice before they carry out any further attacks.

In conclusion, no matter how severe the conflict between criminal authorities is, harming innocent civilians must be off-limits to them. Make no mistake, criminal terrorism is much more serious than terrorist acts of national character performed by our enemies – and all parties concerned must join forces in order to effectively deal with this phenomena as  soon as possible.
