This past week we all heard about the assassination attempt on the life of Acre's mayor Shimon Lankry. Fortunately, the attempt failed but nevertheless an emphasis should be placed on securing Israeli Mayors' lives.
For years now, mayors and other senior local public officials find themselves in the line of fire being attacked by criminal authorities who try to extort them using force, frequent threats and even assassination attempts. Those criminals simply want to get what they need and they don't care who gets hurt in the process.
The State of Israel must protect its own mayors
The state doesn't do enough to protect the mayors and the public officials that are afraid for their lives. The offenders steal public land, take over public property, build without any permits and as a matter of fact do whatever they please. Most of the times, the police often tends to close their eyes and simply ignore those incidents. In those few cases that the police does decide to do something it doesn't necessarily stop the criminals. They simply use other tact
The mayors in charge of the local councils are simply easy targets for people wishing to harm them. After the assassination attempt we have all been informed that Mr. Lankry turned to the police before the shooting and told them that he received several threats. When someone decides to take a mayor he out he collects the proper intelligence and patiently waits for the right moment to come. Luckily enough, the assassin fired only one shot and the bullet came out. Had it went a few inches to the left – the mayor probably wouldn't have been alive
Both the police and the municipal authorities should establish local security forces in charge of securing both the mayor and the city council building itself. The people in this force should be professional bodyguards that are well trained and equipped to cope with this kind of threat.
BTS Security specializes in VIP Security focusing on senior public officials. For example, once we had been assigned with securing former Mayor of Tel-Aviv, Shlomo Lahat, who was stressed after he thought that his life is in constant danger, we did everything in our power to eliminate the threat and allow him to go back and rule the city safely. This is what we specialize and believe me – we know our job.
